Political and business leaders from the Baltic Rim states will be meeting in Helsinki on Feruary 10 for Baltic Sea Action Summit. The organisers of the February conference aim for concrete steps to clean up the Baltic, which they call 'the world's most polluted sea'.
Yle News reported that the objective is to build on the Baltic Sea Action Plan agreed by these countries in November 2007 in Cracow, Poland. That document commits the signatories to "restore the good ecological status of the Baltic marine environment by 2021".
The plan was drawn up by the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), which seeks to protect the Baltic from pollution through intergovernmental co-operation between the nine countries bordering the sea, as well as the EU.
The event has been convened by President Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Cargotec board chairman Ilkka Herlin.
The latter chairs the Helsinki-based Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG). Its Advisory Board includes Halonen, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and his Estonian counterpart Urmas Paet as well as Nokia & Shell chairman Jorma Ollila.
